Viscosity sensors for the oil and gas industry

Viscosity is a key parameter across the oil industry in both upstream extractions and downstream processing applications. Hydramotion viscometers are used widely for the measurement of crude oil and all its refined fractions, either as part of the refinement processes or end products. These are true on-line viscometers designed for continuous use without intervention in extremes of temperature, pressure, flow and viscosity and ensure that your production processes run more efficiently, predictably and cost-effectively.

Turning oil and gas reserves into valuable future products requires precisely controlled processes. Continuous monitoring from inline viscometers provides instant feedback of fluid changes allowing real-time optimisation of the process. This drives up productivity and quality, eliminates waste and removes the need for sample-based laboratory testing.

Furthermore our HyperVisc PVT viscometer range is capable of measuring reservoir fluids at geological temperatures and pressures. The highest performance viscometer of its type.

In-field robustness

Oil and gas environments expose inline instruments to high pressures, temperature extremes, vibration, and aggressive process fluids. Hydramotion viscometers are engineered to physically withstand these conditions, with all-welded construction and availability in corrosion-resistant alloys such as Hastelloy, Inconel, and Super Duplex stainless steel.

Maximum reliability

Reliable process data depends on stable long-term measurement performance. XL7 viscometers operate continuously without routine maintenance or recalibration, delivering repeatable viscosity data over their full service life. Precision engineering and stable measurement principles ensure long-term reliability with minimal operator intervention.

Intrinsic safety (Ex)

Every XL Series viscometer is available as an Ex Certified product, certified using the Intrinsic Safety (IS) protection method. The Ex ‘ia’ certificate allows operation in even the most hazardous Zone 0 areas. And because all signals between sensor and safe area are digital, connection is simple, allowing long cable runs and only a single safety barrier.

APPLICATIONS

A Dependable Tool for Bitumen and Refinery Fuel

Residue oil’s viscosity must be carefully controlled to optimise atomisation prior to combustion. In this case, the viscometer continuously monitors the oil in real-time, providing crucial data to an automated control loop…
